Tumblr, Plurk, New Navigation

Greetings gang,

It’s been a while since our last post. We’ve been busy “under the hood” reworking several things on the site:

New Navigation

One of the reason we’ve been slow to add more services is because we don’t want to complicate the user experience any more than we have to, and previously Iminta’s design layout meant that more services would make the signup experience and the navigation experience more complicated.

To that end we’ve updated the two places where all the accounts are listed: your profile page where you set up your accounts and the navigation when you’re viewing your stuff or your friend’s stuff. Now the accounts page is much tidier:

And so is the navigation:

So, now that we’re ready to add more sites…

Tumblr and Plurk

We’ve had a lot of requests for various services to support but lately these two have been by far in the highest demand. Plurk was an easy one to add, but Tumblr represents a bit of a challenge.

To start with, Tumblr lets you pull in feeds of your own on to your Tumblr blog. Diggs, Yelps, Flickr, whatever. You can even pull Iminta into Tumblr (and now you can pull Tumblr into Iminta). Since Iminta also pulls in this data, we had some leg work to do to make sure we didn’t create a loop or duplicate data. Furthermore, Tumblr lets you categorize your stuff - posts, links, conversations, photos, vidoes, etc. Iminta has categories for most of these things too.

So the way that Tumblr works is like this: We only pull in content you post directly to Tumblr. If you pull in Diggs or Flickr images to Tumblr, we won’t get those. If you want to pull those things in, you’ll need to set up your accounts here at Iminta. Additionally, when you add content to Tumblr and choose a category, it’ll show up in the corresponding category on Iminta. We’ve added several new categories to match up: quotes, links, audio clips, etc.

One other thing about Tumblr. If you want to import your Iminta feed back into Tumblr, you can do that easily, but it will probably look and work best if you exclude Tumblr itself from your feed. Just log in to your account, visit your page of what you’re into, select Tumblr’s favicon in the right navigation (to filter on it) and then click “invert” so that everything EXCEPT Tumblr is selected. Now click “get RSS” in the upper right navigation and then click the upper left RSS icon (plain XML for the current filter). This will give you a feed of all your stuff EXCEPT Tumblr.
